IOWA GHOST TOWNS
COUNTY OF EMMET
TOWN OF SWAN LAKE
Swan Lake was platted in 1879 for Alexander Gordon, Mary Gordon, C. Cowell and Asa
C. Call. It was developed primarily to use as the County Seat for
Emmet County because that location was in the
center of the County.
However there were others who wanted the county seat to be
established elsewhere. It was voted on in an election on October 9, 1879 and Swan
Lake lost.
Swan Lake was located near a lake called by the same name. Swan Lake had a town
square in the center of the town.
Some businesses that were started in the town
were a hotel owned by Adolphus Jenkins, L.R. Bingham owned a Merchant Store. A
Presbyterian Church was organinized there in 1880. Swan Lake's residents were in
hopes the town would grow and prosper but when the County seat went to Estherville
Swan Lake started to go the way of a lot of the ghost towns. Now there is nothing
there to show the town ever existed.
Do you live near there or within driving range. Could you take some pictures
