The Stillwater post office was established in 1871 and was first kept in the house of Z.H. Upham, who was the
first postmaster. It was located on the SW ¼ Section 8, East Lincoln Township. This office received mail from
the Walker Stage line from Charles City. This point was therefore used as a stage stop with accommodations
for the passengers and stables for the extra horses. A school had been started, and in 1878 the Congregational
Church purchased the school building and used it for church services. After the railroad was built through
Orchard, the post office was moved to that place. Soon after the stage coach lines were discontinued and that
was the end of Stillwater. The Congregational Church has since closed and the building is now used as a Township
Hall. The old reed organ which was originally used by the church is now in the Log House Museum of the Historical
Society.
