The village of Bailey in Section 22, Wayne Township, was platted in November 20,
1886 by J. Austin Bailey and Isaac Carter. It was a station point on the Chicago Great Western Railway and at
one time had a population of 225 people. The post office was established March 10, 1887 with Mrs. Mary J. Jordan
as postmaster. It was discontinued January 31, 1940. It was incorporated as a town in 1901 and in 1917 had
the following business enterprises.

BAKERY AND GROCERS -- Jennie E. Frisbie
APIARIST (Bee Keeper) -- J. J. Hall
GRAIN AND COAL -- W. F. Jordan
DRY GOODS -- P. M. Wheeldon
The last place of business to continue in operation was a garage. The school continued
until the consolidation of districts which placed it with Riceville. Some traces are still visible of the town;
streets, sidewalks and some homes. A store building on the north side of the road still stands, and the old
Town Hall remains on the south side of the street.
Bailey’s Ball Team in 1888 consisted of: ? Shea, Arthur Griffin, Walt Griffin,
Jack Vaughn, Bill Griffin, Bill Vaughn, Chas. Loney, Joe Harrison, Elmer Grace and Bill Patterson.
