Curlew  -  A city in Palo Alto County, Iowa, United States. The population was 58 at the 2010 census.


Curlew had its start in the year 1882 by the building of the Des Moines and Fort Dodge Railroad through that territory. It was named by the railroad president, an avid hunter, from the Curlew birds found in the area.

Cylinder  -  A city in Palo Alto County, Iowa, United States. The population was 88 at the 2010 census.


History  -  The town began in 1885 with the construction of a large hay barn, and soon after a railway siding was built to load the hay.  In 1890 a railway depot was constructed, and the town was incorporated in 1900.


The original railway depot was named after nearby Cylinder Creek, which may have received its name after early settlers dropped an engine into the mud and never recovered it.


Professional wrestler Danny Havoc was born in Cylinder, and started wrestling in his family's barn with friends after school.

History  -  Dana was incorporated as a town in 1907. It is named for Samuel Dana, a pioneer settler.

History  -  Dolliver had its start in the year 1899 by the building of the Chicago and North Western Railway through that territory.  It is named for United States Senator Jonathan P. Dolliver.  The railroad line on which the town was established was shut down in the early 1970’s.

Dougherty  -  A city in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, United States. The population was 58 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mason City Micropolitan Statistical Area.


History  -  A post office called Dougherty has been in operation since 1900.  Dougherty was named for a local farmer.

Elkport   -  A city in Clayton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 37 at the 2010 census, down from 88 at the 2000 census.


History  -  Elkport was laid out as a town in 1855. It was named from the Elk Creek.


The town was severely damaged by floods in May 2004. After the floods, all residents of the town chose federal buyout, selling their homes to the United States federal government for demolition.


In September 2006, nearly all of the buildings of Elkport were demolished.

Ellston  -  A city in Ringgold County, Iowa, United States. The population was 57 at the 2000 census.


History  -  In 1881, anticipating the railroad, Cochran & Le Fever built a general store, giving birth to the village of Wirt. The business failed and was sold six months later, but in March 1882 the Humeston & Shenandoah Railroad established a station here.


In 1895 the town's name of Wirt was changed to Ellston so mail would be correctly received, rather than confused with the nearby northeasterly town of Van Wert.


The westerly border of Ellston is county road P-64. This road was originally part of the Dragoon Trace.


The Dragoon Trace or Dragoon Trail is an historic trail that runs north and south through central Iowa and Missouri, including Ringgold County.


It was originally made by the migration of animals, such as buffalo and deer.


Because the Native Americans knew the animals had searched out the best place to cross the creeks and rivers, they too traveled this narrow path. Later used by the pioneers, this was the road to change Iowa's civilization.

Galt -  A city in Wright County, Iowa, United States. The population was 32 at the 2010 census.

History  -  Garber, first called East Elkport, was surveyed in 1872 by John Garber, who also served as the first postmaster there.

History  -  Gillett Grove was laid out in 1899 when the railroad was extended to that point.  The city was named for brothers George and Isaiah Gillett, pioneer settlers.

History  -  The Greenville post office opened in 1871. The town was named for its first postmaster, A. W. Green.

Bank robbery of 1901  -  On November 16, 1901, one Mr. Brown opened the bank in Greenville and discovered that the bank had been robbed. The vault handle had been removed, explosives placed into the opening, and the vault door blown off.


Three men were seen later in Spencer, then Webb, and finally Albert City where they were cornered at the depot. A gunfight ensued, during which one of the gunmen was killed. The other two were captured and later sentenced to life terms in Fort Madison, while the dead gunman was buried in an unnamed grave in Fairfield Cemetery in Albert City.


Sixty-four empty shells were picked up in the depot after the fight.



Notable Natives  -  Medal of Honor recipient Col. Merlyn Hans Dethlefsen, USAF, was born in Greenville.  He died on December 14, 1987 and was subsequently buried in Section 65 of Arlington National Cemetery.


Merlyn Hans Dethlefsen (June 29, 1934 – December 14, 1987) was a United States Air Force officer and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Vietnam War.


Early life  -  Dethlefsen was born June 1934 in Greenville, Iowa. After attending Iowa State University for two years, he joined the Air Force from Royal, Iowa in 1953, and was commissioned through the aviation cadet program in 1955.
