Le Claire once had a School called the Shake Rag School. The school had no bell with which to call the students in. So the teacher used to come outside and "shake a rag" (thus the name) to get the students attention and alert them that is was time to come in. As I am told, this school used be right where Territorial Road is now, just up from, Cody Road. Territorial Road used to follow along the creek and at sometime they decided to straighten out the bend in Territorial Road. The Shake Rag School was torn down. But it used to sit right on what is today Territorial Road. I bought an old photo of that school at an internet auction site. There are a number of students sitting on the front steps.
Click this picture to see a larger version You can see the orginal picture at the "Buffalo Bill" Museum in Le Claire, Iowa. Donated by yours truly. If you can identify those in the picture or if you have any stories, photo's or any thing about that old school and would like to pass them along you can use the "Send Email" link at the top or bottom of this page. Also am looking for the decendants of those in the picture. Evidently there were other schools in Le Claire. If you can name them and/or tell where they once stood, by all means let me know so they can be posted on this site along with the ole' Shake Rag School. Send a Class or school picture for them. Use .gif, .tiff. or jpg format. |
