Looking at a 1913 Sioux Co. plat book, in the far NW corner of Garfield township and very close to a railroad track as well as the Big Sioux River there was a (town or something to do with the railroad?) named "Austin".

Can you shed any light on it? I'm researching the early history of Sioux & Lyon counties as well as Lincoln in SD. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After a phone call to this library, the following was submitted by Valerie Haverhals,

Library Director of Hawarden Public Library

I just talked to you on the telephone. Checking an atlas of Garfield Township from 1905, I do see Austin on it. Also, it says there was an elevator located there. This would be on the Big Sioux River.  My husband remembers old timers talking about a railroad perhaps being built from that point to Rock Valley, IA., however that never happened.

I am putting out some feelers for any info about this. Austin sits on the Iowa/South Dakota border. Perhaps some Hudson South Dakota people have heard of it.

Enjoyed talking to you and good luck on your search. Lebanon, of course, still exists and it is where we attend church. My husband's grandfather homesteaded in Garfield Township.
