A General in the war of 1812 and the 6th govenor of the state of Kentucky
Created from Des Moines in 1851.
The County seat is: Greenfield

Listed below are names and descriptions of Adair County towns and villages, many have long ago disappeared,
Some became a part of other towns, that are still in existance today.
The list below was taken from the Annuls of Iowa Vols. XVII & XVIII.

ADAIR. In the southeastern part of section 13, Washington Township, Post office 1853-73

* Arbor Hill. Click for more information and pictures.

AVONDALE. In the northwestern part of section 13, Washington Township. Post office, 1875-1881.

BEREA. In section 18, Eureka Township. Post office, 1897-1903.

CARBONDALE. In the southwestern part of section 33, Summit Township. Plat of the town filed in 1892

GILEAD. In section 28, Grove Township, Post office, 1900.

GROVELAND. In section 28, Grove Township Post office 1870-85

* Hebron. Click for more information and pictures - The orginal name for Hebron was actually, Schweers Mill. Hebron is located in section 34, Grand River Township.

HOLADAY'S. In section 27, Jefferson Township. Post office, 1855-97

JACKSON. In section 5, Jackson Township. Post office, 1869-85.

LEATH CITY. In sections 20 and 21, Union Township. Plat filed in 1902.

LEMONT. In the southwestern part of section 31, Grove Township. as shown on maps of 1875-80. It never got farther then a town on paper.

LINWOOD. In section 3, summit Towship, as shown on maps of 1905.

McKINLEY. Listed in U.S. Postal Guide of 1900. Post office in Adair County but not found on maps of that period.

NANITO. In section 16, Grand River Township. Post office 1900-03.

PRUSSIA. In section 14, Prussia Township. Post office, 1900-03.

PRUSSIA CENTER. In section 27, Prussia Township, as shown on maps of 1881.

SUMMERSET. The orginal name of the present town of Fontanelle. Platted in 1855 and name changed to Fontanelle in 1857.

VINO. In section 24, Richland Township. Post office, 1873-75

WAHTAWWAH. In section 13, Grove Township. Post office, 1851-54. Name changed to Holaday's (which see above) and location changed.
